It's really nice when your pond has crystal clear water and you can see to the bottom, and not so great if your pond is bright green and murky with algae. There is a few things you can do to help keep your pond clear:
- Locate it in a shaded area, as bright sunlight will increase the amount of algae in the pond.
- Add some water lilies, so not all of the surface water is exposed to light.
- Add oxygenating plants to the water, such as starwort, hornwort, willow moss and upright water milfoil. These will naturally release oxygen into the water.
- Use a solar oxygenator. A solar panel creates electricity that powers a small pump, that makes air bubbles in the pond, via a pipe and airstone. Eg. The solar 150 available to order here - https://www.gardenis.co.uk/collections/pond-water-features/products/solar-oxygenator-150
- Another way to create oxygen bubbles for the pond is to add a solar powered fountain. This has an added benefit of creating an attractive water feature in the pond. Sizes 200 litre to 800 litre are available to order here - https://www.gardenis.co.uk/collections/pond-water-features
Try the above and you should see a noticeable improvement of your pond's water, within a couple of weeks.
