Styphnolobium japonicum
A highly ornamental tree from the east. Perfect for Japanese / oriental style gardens, or contemporary gardens.
Native to China, and later introduced to Japan.
Not suitable for planting in native British woodland.
Tolerant of pollution, poor soils and drought.
Deciduous, it loses it leaves in winter.
Fruits when mature toxic to humans, do not eat.
TREE FOR GARDEN
White sweet pea like, flowers in late summer, when most other trees have finished blossoming in spring / early summer. However, it only flowers when fully mature.
Grows very tall if not pruned.
Does well in a sunny, sheltered position.
Although drought tolerant, when young ensure the tree is watered regularly during summer. Wrapping the young trunk in Hessian or fleece will help protect it in winter, when young.
Hardy to down to zone 4, most of Britain is 7 to 9, so it can be grown here.
Grow on for a while in a pot with compost, then plant in its final position, when it's a bit larger.
BONSAI
The tree is ideal for bonsai, and can be grown in a small pot to keep the tree very small, or in a larger outdoor planter to restrict it's growth to a small shrub size.
